About Us

The history of the Concordia Baptist church has been one of consistent effort in the cause of Christ for more than 150 years. We were founded in 1850 when Carl Kresse was sent as a missionary by the Baptist Home Missions Society of St. Louis, Missouri. Church services were held in members' homes until 1862 when the first church building was erected on Route PP, south of Concordia. The original cemetery still stands at this site.

Shortly after the church was built, the City Commissioner of Concordia offered two lots to any organization that would build a meeting house. Concordia Baptist Church accepted this offer and began work on a building on two lots on Gordon Street within the city of Concordia.

In 1866, Concordia Baptist organized the First (German) Baptist church in Higginsville, Missouri.

In 1884 the church building in the country was enlarged, along with the addition of a bell tower and a bell. This church later closed its doors, but the bell was moved to the church in town.

Concordia Baptist Church grew over the years and in 1976 began construction on our current building. The bell from the old country church was moved, again, in to the new building. The new building has been expanded to hold the growing congregation and the bell is now prominently displayed in the open bell tower.

A number of young men and women have gone out from this church as pastors and missionaries: Maude Powell Herman, Arthur Kresse, Raymond Nolte, Frieda Barklage, Emily Barklage, Kathryn Kuhlman, James Everett Musgrave, Delcie Musgrave Wakefield, J. E. Lancaster, Raymond McCain, Randy Arnett, Bill Miller, and Ed Stutz.

A lot has changed since those days of meeting in homes, but one thing remains - our love for Christ.
